Hmmm...I don't preceive that he is clueless, and perhaps there is a story to why she is unhappy with him. I loved how she played a sort of "Madame Bovary" very dramatically and then a a modern day wife in a very realistic context at the end. The crescendos of the lyrics fit the emotional frustration of the song so well.
