TWO SPOTTERS HELD IT ABOUT 3 FEET OFF THE GROUND TO KEEP IT FROM DRIFTING TOO FAR. Here's a little more info about this demonstration:
They were originally going to do an unguided flight, going up into the air. However, the pilot pulled out at the last minute, so Glenn Martin's son did the demonstration. However, he had not flown that particular model before, so for safety reasons he only did a guided hover.
This can go to 8000 feet.

Other than the unfortunate voice-over, this video is intriguing. Is there no way of talking about a Jet Pack without having to hear a reference to Superman? Still, cool invention from a New Zealander. I'd like to see the experiment without the two assistants holding onto it :P

It's a ballistic parachute, so it's up extremely fast and is quite small. However, in the extreme case that it doesn't get the parachute up before you hit the ground, it's got a thing they call the "pogo stick" which is basically a shock absorber (you can see it in this video).
Pretty much, if you're high up you've got the parachute. If you're low down, you've got the shock absorber.
