He probably was but if you look at the history of Rock Music, alot of Groups had someone who had that special star power.
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes had it with Teddy Pendergras. The J. Geils Band had it with Peter Wolf, even The Jeff Beck Group had it with Rod Stewart, and look where he is now and his former group members are although Jeff Beck did well for himself as well as Ron Wood.

Steve Winwood is boss, such a small awkward guy when he plays but what talent and such a huge voice, why can't we have singers with this much presences today, seems like no one can really howl and put soul in music today, all they can really do is whine and cry through their autotuned studio creations.
