I think everyone's watching this kid get beat up, and everyone but his mom wants him to fight back, and the mother doesn't want to turn her kid into what she deems a monster. she finally gets fed up with watching her son get beat up, so she presses that red button that makes him able to defend himself. from what I can gather, anyways.
