The video game industry has produced so much wonderful music over the past 20 years that it would make you cry. Music is a huge part of video games, and personally I find it asinine to suggest that it's sad to be introduced to good music through a video game, since most of the original video game music out there (material composed by actual video game companies) is beautiful, wonderful, and just as catchy as anything you probably like.

Problem with finding a band/song via video game is now some people make that conection...like "Hey, isn't that the one song from that one video game"?
"No, it isn't. It appeared on that video game but it was originally from this album...blah, blah, blah." It's like someone doing a cover of an older song and people only know of the cover and the band who covered the song. Most of the time people don't bother to listen to the older version when they do know it is a cover.

I just came for the Pixies, but since this discussion was already started before I got here...
Video game companies don't produce good music anymore than the Pixies produce a good video game. Companies hire musicians, or pay royalties for music use, hence the good music they can use is made by good musicians.
Video games are just another medium, like jukeboxes or radio or the internet. I never heard the original "Tainted Love" until GTA San Andreas. Nothing beats live shows, though.

thats the problem with people who are just negative. If it wasnt for covers of songs by some people (look at James Blunt covering where is my mind) and things like Rock Band a lot of people wouldnt know about bands like this. Thats why any way getting your song out there is good, its whether the song is good or not if people listen. SO people have to stop bitching and simply let songs be songs.

sure, sometimes covers aren't "as good" as the original, but they help immensely to promote the original band. it's a GOOD thing.
